Where to stay in Fez: best neighborhoods

Searching where to stay in Fez is one of the most important points when planning a trip to the city. Although we have to say that in this case the search will probably be faster than in other cities, as most tourist attractions are very close to each other and there are relatively few areas where to sleep in Fez.

Based on the days we spent in the city during the trip to Casablanca, Meknes and Fez, from which we wrote this guide to Fez, we leave you a selection of places to stay in Fez and the best neighborhoods. Let’s get started!

Neighborhoods where to stay in Fez

First and for you to get an idea of the distribution of the city, we tell you what are the areas in which the city is divided, and on which we will focus in this post, and which are also the recommended areas to find a hotel in Fez, as all are relatively close to the tourist attractions:

  • Fez el-Bali: also known as the old medina and famous for its chaotic and labyrinthine streets, this is for us the best area to stay in Fez.
  • Fez el-Jdid: founded in the 12th century, this is the new medina of the city, where the Royal Palace and the Mellah or Jewish quarter of Fez are located.
  • Ville Nouvelle: also known as the New City of Fez, this area was founded in the twentieth century and is where most Western businesses are concentrated.

1. Fez el-Bali, the best place to stay in Fez

With more than 300 neighborhoods, the Fez el-Bali Measure was founded in the eighth century, making it the oldest part of Fez. Known also for being a labyrinth in its entirety, in which it is not exactly easy to find your way around, this is for us the best area to sleep in Fez, considering that it is the place where most of the places to see in Fez are located.

In addition to this Fez el-Bali will allow you to stay in some of the best riads in the city, since in this area it is not easy to find conventional hotels, being the traditional hotels the most abundant in the labyrinthine streets.

The price of accommodation in Fez el-Bali is usually 40-50 euros per night.

2. Fez el-Jdid, another of the best places to sleep in Fez

Although Fez el-Jdid is very similar to Fez el-Bali and it is often difficult to determine where one ends and the other begins, at the administrative level, Fez el-Jdid can be said to be another area of Fez.

Founded in the thirteenth century, this area became the seat of royal power and is where we currently find the Royal Palace, which can not be visited, in addition to the Mellah or Jewish quarter, where you can not fail to stroll along the Boulevard Bou Ksissat, one of its main arteries.

In our experience, although it is also a good area to stay in Fez, we believe it is better Fez el-Bali as there are many more attractions and is where you can enjoy the more traditional city.

The price of accommodation in Fez el-Jdid is usually 40 euros per night.

3. Ville Nouvelle, the new city of Fez

Known as the New City of Fez, this is the most modern part of the city, began to be built in the twentieth century, and is currently the area where foreigners who live in the city tend to stay, due to its western atmosphere.

In addition to accommodation with higher prices and less traditional than in the Medina, in Hassan II Avenue, the main artery of the city, you can find a wide range of restaurants of all cuisines, cafes and locals in which to enjoy a much more European style than in the rest of the city.

Because it is away from the main tourist attractions for us this is the least recommended area to stay in Fez. The price of accommodation in Ville Nouvelle is usually 40 euros per night.

Tips for finding cheap accommodation in Fez

We leave you a series of tips and recommendations so that finding a place to stay in Fez is easy and comfortable as well as fast.

  • As in other cities in Morocco, we recommend staying in a riad, the traditional Moroccan accommodation, from which you can get to know and enjoy one of the most special accommodations in the world.
  • As we have commented on several occasions, after our experience, we recommend staying in the Medina, especially in Fez el-Bali, the most traditional area.
  • Although accommodation in Fez is usually quite inexpensive, if you are traveling in high season, we recommend booking as far in advance as possible to save as much as possible.
  • Remember that to avoid paying commissions and to always have the current exchange rate we recommend you to use the Revolut card and the N26 card, which are the ones we use, are free of charge and will save you a lot of money.
