We imagine that you have arrived here looking for where to stay in the Amalfi Coast, right? If so, don’t worry because in this post we are going to give you all the information about the different towns and areas where it is best to stay in the Amalfi Coast, one of the most beautiful areas of Italy.
Although there are many travelers who plan to sleep in several towns during their stay on the Amalfi Coast, our recommendation, after the experience, is that you choose to make a base in only one of them, to avoid having to move luggage from one side to another and to enjoy the town you have chosen, with more tranquility.
This will also allow you to have more time and, above all, to better plan your getaways or visits, since you will not have to look for extra information or move from one place to another. Likewise, it is always easier to find better prices if you stay more than one night in the same hotel, although we already tell you, finding cheap hotels in the Amalfi Coast is usually mission impossible.
This leads us to recommend, even before talking about the best towns to stay in the Amalfi Coast, the need to book as far in advance as possible, especially in summer, since availability is not much and prices soar to limits that sometimes border the crazy. Based on our trip to the Amalfi Coast, during which we stayed in several villages, we tell you all the information about where to stay on the Amalfi Coast. Let’s get started!
Best villages to stay in the Amalfi Coast
With 50 kilometers of coastline, extending along the southern part of the Sorrento peninsula, in the region of Campania, the Amalfi Coast is dotted with charming villages, both coastal and mountainous, which can become perfect bases for your trip along the Amalfi Coast on your own. However, it is true that there are some more suitable than others, because depending on whether you are going to rent a car or not, some have better connections than others.
Taking all this into account, these would be the options that we believe are the most suitable for sleeping on any route along the Amalfi Coast for several days:
- Positano
- Amalfi
- Ravello
- Sorrento
- Maiori or Minori
- Vietri sul Mare
- Salerno
- Naples
As you can see, there are many options to stay in the Amalfi Coast, although we have already told you that our favorites are Amalfi or Positano, two towns that we believe are perfect for their location, infrastructure and above all, good connections with the rest of this area of the Italian coast.
Positano, the most beautiful village to sleep in the Amalfi Coast
Considered the most beautiful village of the Amalfi Coast, Positano is, without any doubt, one of the best options to stay in the Amalfi Coast as it has a large number of hotel options as well as a wide range of restaurants. In addition to this, being one of the tourist attractions, the town enjoys very good communication with the rest of the tourist spots in the area.
Of course, we can not ignore something very important: the prices of hotels in Positano are the highest of the entire Amalfi Coast and, especially in summer, these are tripled, reaching up to 1000 euros for a double room.
In addition to this, many of the accommodations (most of them) do not have parking, something practically essential if you have rented a car because in Positano there are few parking spaces and the few that there are have prices of even 8-10 euros per hour.
The price of accommodation in Positano is usually above 300-400 euros (high season) and those with a view are usually above 700-1000 euros. In mid-season you can find options for 150-200 euros.
- Pros: you will be in one of the most beautiful locations of the Amalfi Coast.
- Cons: Prices are high and there is a lot of tourism.
Although initially the cons may balance the balance towards another area to stay in the Amalfi Coast, if you find a good offer, we would not rule out Positano first. Especially in mid-season as it seems to us a town with a very special charm despite being so touristy.
Amalfi, the perfect base for sleeping on the Amalfi Coast
We are not going to lie to you. If we had to choose a place to sleep in the Amalfi Coast, without a doubt, our choice would be Amalfi. Known for being one of the most charming towns in this area of Italy, Amalfi can also boast of having a charming historic center, with a wide range of restaurants and hotels, something that makes it a perfect choice to stay during your trip.
But not only that, because Amalfi is also the hub of all SITA bus routes (those that run along the Amalfi Coast) so if you choose to make Amalfi your base on the Amalfi Coast, you will have little or no need to worry about transportation.
In addition, like Positano, being one of the most famous towns, the frequency of ferries is very high so you can also move by boat in a quick and easy way.
And as if these were not enough reasons, we also have to tell you that it is in an ideal location, in the middle of the Amalfi Coast so you will be close to everything.
It is important to know that in Amalfi there are also parking problems and it is not easy to find hotels that have it included. In our case we stayed at the Residenza Panza, right in the center, just 5 minutes walk from the Cathedral and the port. This hotel has a valet parking service (35 euros per day) and also luggage transfer, something very useful as it is located at the bottom of some steep stairs, inside a pedestrian area, like many other accommodations and it is not comfortable to carry luggage up to the upper area.
The price of accommodation in Amalfi is usually around 200 euros (high season). In mid-season you can find options for 100 euros per night.
- Pros: it is a beautiful town and it has the best public transport connections on the Amalfi Coast. It is also in an intermediate point so you will not have to travel many kilometers every day to visit the rest of the towns. Also, if you want to do the Path of the Gods, it is perfect to be able to move to the starting point.
- Cons: Prices are somewhat higher than in the other towns where to stay on the Amalfi Coast.
As we told you at the beginning, if we had to choose a single base to stay in the Amalfi Coast, we believe that Amalfi meets all the conditions: good location, great hotel and restaurant offer, charming historic center and very good connections with public transport. It has become clear that Amalfi seems to us a jewel to sleep in the Amalfi Coast, right?
Ravello, one of the best choices if you are looking for a quiet stay on the Amalfi Coast
Located on a hill, with unique views of the coastline, Ravello is, in addition to one of the must-see places on the Amalfi Coast, another of the options where to sleep on the Amalfi Coast if you are looking for a quiet base to escape from tourism and the overcrowding of the coastal towns.
It is important to know that Ravello, although on the map it seems to be relatively close to the coast, in the middle of summer it is not so much because the roads are usually collapsed so, if you want to take it as a base, you should count on that extra time investment in transfers.
Also, being an inland town you will not have the possibility of moving by boat, something that in high season, allows you to save time in travel.
Nevertheless, the town has a beautiful historic center and the possibility to visit Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, the two most famous villas of the Amalfi Coast.
The price of accommodation in Ravello is usually around 150-200 euros (high season). In mid season you can find options for less than 100 euros per night.
- Pros: it is much quieter than Positano or Amalfi.
- Cons: It has no beach and is a little farther away than the rest of the locations on the coast.
We stayed at Gala Residence Villa Giovanna, an accommodation just outside the historic center, with unique views of the coast from the top and parking included in the room, which makes it one of the best options to stay in Ravello if you have a rental car.
Sorrento, a comfortable place to stay on the Amalfi Coast
Gateway to the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento enchants travelers thanks to its historic center, its views of Mount Vesuvius and a cuisine that delights the most gourmets.
In addition, it has a train station, so it is very easy to go from Naples to Sorrento and then move around the other points of interest by bus or boat. If to all this we add that it is usually the place from which you take the boat to go to Capri, Sorrento becomes one of the best options to stay on the Amalfi Coast if you want comfort and do not mind investing time to go and return each day to the rest of the towns.
Another interesting aspect is that Sorrento has a wide range of accommodations and restaurants, so you will have many options to choose from, no matter what you are looking for.
The price of accommodation in Sorrento is usually around 130-150 euros (high season). In mid-season you can find options for less than 100 euros per night.
- Pros: it has a train station, a charming historic center and very good connections with the rest of the Amalfi Coast.
- Cons: It is not centrally located and if you have to go back and forth every day, you will spend a lot of time in transfers.
We stayed at the Hotel Leone, a couple of blocks from the historic center, but with parking and breakfast included in the room price, making it one of the best value for money hotels in Sorrento.
Maiori and Minori, two alternatives for cheap lodging on the Amalfi Coast
We have already told you that it is not our favorite accommodation option in the Amalfi Coast but if we take into account some aspects, it can be a perfect choice for travelers looking for a quieter town than the touristy Positano, Amalfi or even Ravello.
In addition, both have a beach and a port, so you will have a good ferry connection with the rest of the Amalfi Coast towns. There is also the SITA bus, although you must keep in mind that in this case, both are in the southern part of the Amalfi Coast so depending on the towns you want to visit, especially if you go in summer, you will spend a lot of time on the road.
All this, together with the fact that the prices in Maiori and Minori are much lower than in the other towns, make them a very valid option where to sleep on the Amalfi Coast. In addition, none of them have historical centers with steep ups and downs, something that is also an aspect to value if you are traveling with children.
The price of accommodation in Maiori and Minori is usually around 100 euros (high season). In mid-season you can find options for 75 euros per night.
- Pros: quieter and cheaper than not Positano or Amalfi.
- Cons: It is further away from the main points of the Amalfi Coast.
We were only in these villages for a visit but we can say that we found them very quiet and also, that we found parking quickly so if you have a rental car, they can also be a very acceptable alternative to stay in the Amalfi Coast.
Vietri sul Mare, a perfect base to reach the Amalfi Coast by train.
Vietri sul Mare, along with Sorrento, are the two towns of the Amalfi Coast that have a train station so it can be a very comfortable base to visit this area of the Italian coast because you can arrive by train from Naples and once there, move by bus or boat to the rest of the towns. Besides, it has one of the most beautiful historical centers of the Amalfi Coast and in spite of that, it is not very touristic. If you choose it as a base, you will be able to enjoy some peace and quiet at night when you return to sleep.
Note that Vietri sul Mare has a beach but it is in the lower part of the town and the historic center is in the upper part, so you will have to walk uphill to get from one to the other. The train station is in the upper part but connects perfectly with the historic center, either walking or through a free elevator. There is also a large paid parking lot next to the station.
In case you want to stay in two towns during your trip, we would opt to stay in Amalfi and Vietri sul Mare as we found them to be two perfect choices for sleeping on the Amalfi Coast.
The price of accommodation in Vietri sul Mare is usually over 100 euros (high season). In mid-season you can find options for less than 75 euros per night.
- Pros: it has a train station and the historic center is charming.
- Cons: It is far from the most touristic spots.
We stayed at Calamarina BB, right in the historic center, with parking next door and breakfast included in the room. Although the latter was quite basic, served in a cafeteria next to the accommodation, the rooms were large, with everything you need and the location was exceptional.
Salerno, the cheapest place to sleep on the Amalfi Coast
Are you looking for cheap accommodation on the Amalfi Coast? Then, if you don’t mind sacrificing location, Salerno is the best choice. Located on the gulf of the same name, this city, very little touristic, can also be a perfect option to discover that other more local part of this area of the country, which you probably can’t enjoy in the more touristic towns.
Besides, the city is perfectly connected by train with Naples, so you can arrive perfectly from the city or the airport and then, move by train to Sorrento or Vietri sul Mare and from there, by bus or boat to other towns of the Amalfi Coast.
The price of accommodation in Salerno is usually around 50 euros (high season). In mid-season you can find options for less than 50 euros per night.
- Pros: it has a train station and is not very touristic.
- Cons: it is the most remote area
We only visited it and did not stay there, but if your budget is tight and you cannot find any hotel on the Amalfi Coast that fits your price range, this can certainly be an alternative. However, it is important to consider the price of transportation and the time investment.
Naples, the perfect place for a trip to the Amalfi Coast
If you just want to make a day trip to the Amalfi Coast, without complicating your life too much, the best option to sleep in the Amalfi Coast would be Naples. Known for being a city with as many lovers as detractors, we are already in love with it and we think it is one of the most interesting cities in the country, we can only encourage you to discover it and above all, live it.
Of course, the ideal, without any doubt, is to dedicate 1 or 2 days to complete this list of places to see in Naples in addition to a visit to Pompeii and Herculaneum, which is one of the best excursions from Naples along the Amalfi Coast.

That is why, whenever you can, the ideal is to spend a couple of days in Naples and then take a day trip to the Amalfi Coast or go by train to Sorrento and from there, spend a couple of days on the Amalfi Coast, staying in one of the hotels that we have recommended in this post.
In case you do not want to worry about anything, another great option is to book this Amalfi Coast Excursion, this one to Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast or this one to Pompeii and Sorrento.
The price of accommodation in Naples, in the historic center area, is usually around 80-100 euros (high season).
- Pros: you can take the opportunity to visit the city and go to Pompeii and Herculaneum.
- Cons: you are far from the Amalfi Coast.
Tips to find cheap accommodation on the Amalfi Coast
We are not going to lie to you. Finding a cheap hotel in the Amalfi Coast, especially in high season, is practically impossible as it is currently one of the most demanded destinations in Italy. That is why we believe, it is important to keep in mind several tips if you want to save as much as possible or at least not pay an exorbitant price for your hotel.
For more recommendations you can consult this list of tips for traveling to the Amalfi Coast:
- Book as far in advance as possible. We know it is something that we repeat a lot but really doing it, will allow you to have not only more options, but also, much more adjusted prices.
- Whenever possible, avoid traveling in July and August, as these are the most touristic months and prices tend to be quite expensive. In addition, roads and towns are often crowded.
- If your budget is very tight, avoid staying in Amalfi, Positano or Ravello. The best is to look for a hotel in Salerno or Vietri sul Mare. Although you will be further away from the other towns, the price of hotels is much cheaper.
- Another option is to stay in Naples. It is not unreasonable if you only want to go to the Amalfi Coast for a day. You won’t be able to see all the towns but if you get up early, you can go to Positano and Amalfi.
- Remember that to avoid paying commissions and to always have the current exchange rate we recommend you to use the Revolut card and the N26 card, which are the ones we use, are free of charge and will save you a lot of money.
